Satellite walkie-talkie: what actually exists in 2026
Three completely different products get sold under that one phrase.
One is a dedicated satellite handset with an airtime subscription. One is satellite-to-cell, which adds limited satellite connectivity to the ordinary phone in your pocket. One is a push-to-talk app, which needs mobile data — that is us. Only the first talks where there is no mobile coverage at all, and anybody telling you otherwise is selling one of the other two.

What about "unlimited range"?
There is no such thing: a satellite push-to-talk handset works across the coverage footprint its operator publishes, needs a clear view of the sky, and stops when the airtime plan does. Ranges and footprints belong to the manufacturer and the network operator, are set out in their own published specifications, and should be read there rather than taken from a marketplace listing.
We publish no range figure for CRAGGEN in miles, kilometres or anything else, because the honest answer is a different shape: it reaches anywhere every phone on the channel has mobile data, and nowhere that they don't.
Why isn't satellite-to-cell a group voice channel yet?
Because carriers admit apps one at a time, and capacity is shared across an enormous satellite footprint, so services launch with texting and add app data cautiously. Several operators now carry selected app data — O2 in the UK, T-Mobile's T-Satellite in the US, Rogers in Canada, One NZ, and Telstra in Australia, which warns that real-time calls may be intermittent. Each of those is a specific approved list, and push-to-talk is not generally on it.

Where does CRAGGEN sit in this?
Our own row, unchanged
CRAGGEN is a 4G/5G push-to-talk app. It is not carrier-approved on any satellite service and has not been field-tested on one. The Android app is technically prepared for constrained satellite networks — one of four gates, with carrier admission, a hardware field test and measured acceptance still outstanding. It needs mobile data at both ends; that's the deal, and we would rather you knew before you bought anything.
So what should you buy?
- Genuinely no coverage, and voice matters: a dedicated satellite handset with airtime, or — for local work inside a small area — licence-exempt PMR446 radios. See the UK licence page.
- Patchy coverage, and you want a safety net for messages: a supported phone on a carrier that offers satellite-to-cell, understanding that it is texting first.
- Coverage across your sites, and you want a crew on one channel: a push-to-talk app, with no hardware to buy and no licence to hold.
- Raising help in an emergency: none of the above. Dial 999, and carry equipment designed for it where the consequence of failure is serious.
