Walkie-talkie app without internet, WiFi or signal? The honest answer
No. Not ours, not anyone’s. Any app promising off-grid voice from a normal phone is overclaiming — here’s what’s actually true, and what genuinely helps.
Straight answer: no ordinary internet walkie-talkie app provides dependable live voice without a data path — not ours, not anyone's. Some apps can make short-range local links, but that is not a substitute for communications across remote ground.
A phone app — any phone app — sends your voice over the internet. No mobile data, no Wi-Fi, no internet: no CRAGGEN voice. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Direct are local radio links whose practical range varies by device and terrain. They are not a dependable replacement for radios, and we'd rather say that now than have you discover it on a hill.
What actually helps when there's no signal
- PMR446 radios. Licence-free handheld radios do real radio-to-radio voice with no network at all. For genuinely remote days, carry them. An honest walkie-talkie app and a pair of cheap radios are complementary, not rivals.
- Register for 999 by text (UK) through emergencySMS before you go. It still needs a mobile connection and can take longer than a voice call; do not assume help is coming until the service replies. Emergency calls may attempt another available UK network, so try 999 or 112 even if your normal network is unavailable.
- Download offline maps before you set off, and agree a meeting point that doesn't depend on anyone's phone.
What CRAGGEN does about weak signal
Where there is a usable connection, CRAGGEN sends audio only while someone talks instead of holding an ordinary group call open. It reconnects automatically as coverage comes and goes, and tells you plainly when you're off channel rather than pretending. What it will never do is claim to work where there's nothing to work with.
The part that is genuinely changing: satellite
Satellite-to-cell — ordinary phones connecting to satellites where there's no mast — is now live in the UK as O2 Satellite, and it changes what "no signal" means. Is there a walkie talkie app that works offline?
Not for dependable live voice over distance. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Direct are local links, not a replacement for radios. For remote ground use suitable radios, satellite equipment or a personal locator beacon as the situation requires.
Is there a walkie talkie app that works with real walkie talkies?
Not by itself. PMR446 radios and phone apps use different radio systems. Bridging them needs compatible specialist gateway equipment; a normal phone app cannot simply join a PMR446 channel.
Do walkie talkie apps use data or WiFi?
Either — mobile data or Wi-Fi, whichever the phone can use. CRAGGEN sends audio only while someone holds the talk button. Usage varies with talk time, group size, codec and network conditions.
Can any app do voice with zero signal?
No. Apps need a data connection. Short-range phone-to-phone modes are not a substitute for dependable off-grid communications. For remote voice use suitable radios or satellite equipment.
Do walkie-talkie apps work in the mountains?
Only where every participating phone has usable mobile data or Wi-Fi. Coverage can change with terrain and network load. In dead zones, app-based live voice does not work, so carry suitable radio and emergency equipment for remote routes.
Will satellite fix this?
It is beginning to extend ordinary-phone coverage. O2 Satellite is live in the UK for eligible devices, plans and selected apps. CRAGGEN is not currently approved or field-tested over O2 Satellite; our dated tracker follows the evidence.
